Michelle, Day Hiking Ambassador
It’s been a really cold winter. This past February was the coldest winter in 115 years for the Ottawa Valley. Temperatures were consistently at -20c to -30c every day. One activity that managed to keep us warm and active was snowshoeing. Staying fit is an important part of my pregnancy. I am currently 37 weeks (9 months and a bit) and feel great. Being active has helped me stay positive and comfortable throughout my pregnancy.
Important things to remember to do while snowshoeing with a baby bump are:
- Take breaks often, let yourself catch your breath
- Drink lots of water, it is very important to stay hydrated
- Take snacks, even if you don’t think you’ll be out for long you always need to have food with you. My go to snowshoeing snacks are apples, granola bars and a peanut butter sandwich.
- Bring a roll of toilet paper and a plastic bag for disposal. Toilet paper is not biodegradable (unless you have a special kind). It is not okay to leave your toilet paper on the side of the trail.
- Go first. I am lucky enough to have a great snowshoe partner who allows me to lead the way so that I can set the pace. Unless there is deep snow, then he will break trail for me making it easier.
- Take lots of pictures. Growing a human being is an amazing thing so why not document it!
I really enjoy being outside with our baby and am looking forward to next year when we can go on family snowshoeing adventures.
