Snow has been a rare occurrence in eastern Massachusetts this winter. Usually by now the grass is buried under a foot of snow, yet this year we’ve only gotten a few inches, all of which melted away almost immediately. I was worried about getting out on our Tubbs for Winter Trails Day but luckily I found a satellite location close by that included snowmaking! Phew. The Weston Ski Track in Weston, MA offered free snowshoeing passes and demo Tubbs Snowshoes for the day!

We didn’t need snowshoes, but we were happy to take advantage of the free passes so we could try out a new venue. Even better, we convinced our friend Stacy to come and try snowshoeing!

Smiles

When we arrived, we met with local Tubbs rep, Jonathan Moore. He helped Stacy pick out a pair of Tubbs to try, making sure she knew how to put on her snowshoes and walk in them. Once she felt comfortable, we headed out onto the groomed trails.

FLEXTRK

It was a bit different than hiking through the woods, most notably having to watch out for the cross-country skiers racing along the trails. We made a large loop, taking time to watch the snowmaking machines at work. Our four year old was fascinated with them – she couldn’t believe people can make snow!

Though I enjoyed our walk, I missed the peaceful nature one gets when hiking through the woods. It was a bit strange to watch cars zooming down the road while we walked, but I can see why people might come here to learn to snowshoe. You can rent snowshoes, the terrain is easy, and they offer lessons.

SHADOWS

We had a fun time at Winter Trails Day. In addition to demo snowshoes and free trail passes, there were local vendors, EMS and C2, selling great outdoor clothing. Mix104.1 played tunes and passed out hot chocolate, granola bars, stickers, and lip balm! Best part – getting out on our Tubbs Snowshoes. It’s been way too long!
